1982-09-15 Juan Laporte w rtd 10 (15) Mario Miranda, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WBC. Referee: Octavio Meyran. Fighting for the title vacated after the tragic death of Salvador Sanchez, Laporte (126) outjabbed and outpunched Miranda (125½) throughout the contest despite being decidedly outreached. Winning two rounds at most, Miranda was simply up against it for most of the time and although he was not put down prior to the tenth he came close to it on a number of occasions. In the tenth, Laporte finally dropped his rival with a right to the head after dishing out severe punishment and although Miranda got back on his feet to last the round out his corner retired him during the interval.

This would be the last 15 rounder for the weight class under the auspices of the WBC, who decided that from 1 January 1983 all world title bouts held under their banner would be contested over 12 rounds.
