1982-09-18 [[Michael Spinks]] w rsc 9 (15) [[Johnny Davis]], Sands Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WBA. Referee: Larry Hazzard. For three rounds Davis (172¾) had Spinks (173¼) backing off before covering up well to thwart the champion’s attempts to nail him, but by the fifth it was all about survival. Gradually softening Davis up with body punches and solid shots to the head, Spinks eventually had his man over in the eighth. Back in action carrying a cut on the left eye, Davis made it to the bell, but with Spinks unloading big punches in the ninth the referee stopped the contest to rescue the challenger at 2.27 of the round following a right to the jaw that left him an open target.
