1982-10-20 [[Leroy Haley]] w pts 15 [[Juan Jose Gimenez]], Public Hall, Cleveland, Ohio, USA - WBC. Referee: Carlos Padilla. Scorecards: 147-143, 147-140, 146-143. In what was a tough defence, Haley (139¼) could never quite subdue the hardy Gimenez (139½), who was always prepared to battle it out even after being dropped by a low blow in the seventh. The classier boxing came from Haley no doubt, but it was Gimenez who forced the fight in the latter stages and although he was rocked by combinations of left hooks and right hands he remained undeterred. In the 13th Gimenez was knocked sideways by a left hook but kept on coming and he continued to walk through the punches until the final bell. A short while later, the WBC announced that, as from 1 January 1983, all world title bouts held under its auspices would be contested over 12 rounds.
