1982-11-13 Leonardo Cruz w co 8 (15) Benito Badilla, Hiram Bithorn Stadium, San Juan, Puerto Rico - WBA. Referee: Larry Rozadilla. The stocky Badilla (122), who was knocked down in round two after being hit by a right uppercut, got up to prove himself a worthy challenger for Cruz (121½) as he hustled and bustled around the ring, occasionally hurting the champion with overarm rights to the head. However, once Cruz got into his stride, despite carrying a cut left eye he opened up in the eighth when cutting loose with both hands. Maintaining his forward march, Cruz eventually landed a short left uppercut to the jaw which dropped Badilla and led to him being counted out on the 1.46 mark.
