1982-12-10 Michael Dokes w rsc 1 (15) Mike Weaver, Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBA. Referee: Joey Curtis. In what was a hugely controversial affair, Dokes (216) won the title when beating Weaver (209¾) after just 63 seconds, the referee having stepped in to rescue the latter. Both men had come out fast, hurting each other with heavy punches, before Dokes put the champion down following two cracking left hooks. Getting up quickly, Weaver was forced to take the mandatory ‘eight’ count before being allowed to box on and was immediately backed against the ropes taking punches to head and body when the referee stepped in. With the crowd calling it a ‘fix’, the referee said that he stopped the contest because Weaver was not fighting back. He went on to say: “I was not going to have another Duk-Koo Kim”, a reference to the South Korean lightweight who died after being beaten by Ray Mancini in a recent title fight.
