1983-01-31 Rafael Orono w co 4 (12) Pedro Romero, The Polyhedron, Caracas, Venezuela - WBC. Referee: Jesus Arias. Cut over right eye in the second round, Romero (115) was really up against it and by the third Orono (114¾) had taken control when having the better of exchanges. Getting right on top in the fourth, Orono hurt the challenger with a right to the body prior to putting him down for the mandatory ‘eight’ with a two-fisted barrage. Back on his feet and trying to fight on, Romero was immediately under pressure before another volley of punches saw him counted out at 1.27 of the session. This was the first championship contest of 12 rounds duration after many years of the distance having been set at 15 and within six years all of the other world bodies had fallen into line.
