1983-02-11 Marvin Hagler w rsc 6 (15) Tony Sibson, The Centrum, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA - WORLD. Referee: Carlos Padilla. Britain’s Sibson (160) was next in line for the champion and there were a few good judges who felt he had the equipment to handle the southpaw champion and at least take him into the latter part of the contest. Unfortunately for Sibson by the end of the second round he was being outboxed and he was carrying a steadily worsening swelling on his left cheek. The next two sessions saw Sibson improving, by at least getting some heavy left hooks off, but he was still being outboxed by Hagler (158¼) who was beginning to look for the finish. Moving up a gear in the fifth, Hagler opened up the lump under Sibson’s left eye and in the sixth, following a battery of blows, put the latter down for the mandatory ‘eight’ count. Although Sibson, now with cuts on both eyes, was up at ‘four’ he was a sitting duck for Hagler’s incisive punches and after being knocked down again despite getting up the referee had seen enough and stopped the contest, the finish being times at 2.40.
