1983-02-11 Marvin Hagler w rsc 6 (15) Tony Sibson, The Centrum, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA - WORLD. Referee: Carlos Padilla. With Britain’s Sibson (160) next in line for the champion there were a few good judges who felt he had the equipment to handle the southpaw champion, or at least take him into the latter part of the contest. Unfortunately for Sibson by the end of the second round he was being outboxed while carrying a steadily worsening swelling on his left cheek. The next two sessions saw Sibson improving, by at least getting some heavy left hooks off, but he was still being pressured by Hagler (158¼) who was beginning to look for the finish. Moving up a gear in the fifth, Hagler opened up the lump under Sibson’s left eye, and in the sixth following a battery of blows he put the latter down for the mandatory ‘eight’ count. Although Sibson, now with cuts on both eyes, was up at ‘four’ he was a sitting duck for Hagler’s incisive punches. And after being knocked down again, despite getting up the referee stopped the contest, the finish being timed at 2.40.
Having outpointed Frank Fletcher over 12 rounds on 13 February, Wilford Scypion not only won the USBA title but elevated himself into the number-one slot to become Hagler’s next challenger. A smart box-fighter, Scypion, who had beaten the ill-fated Willie Classen and Curtis Parker along the way, had won 26 of 29 contests.
