1983-03-15 Charlie Magri w rsc 7 (12) Eleoncio Mercedes, The Arena, Wembley, London, England - WBC. Referee: Ray Solis. Always coming forward, never taking no for an answer, Magri (111½) maintained his attack from the opening bell when working both body and head and giving Mercedes (111½) no room to move. Ultimately, it was an accidental head clash that caused a deep cut over the champion’s left eye and led to him being pulled out by the referee at 1.14 of the seventh round, but by then he was already a beaten man. Following the loss of his WBC title, Mercedes had a further six fights and was thought to have retired when he was shot dead in the Dominican Republic on 22 December 1985 during an argument over a minor traffic accident.
