1983-05-09 Rafael Orono w pts 12 Raul Valdez, Hilton Hotel, Caracas, Venezuela - WBC. Referee: Steve Crosson. Scorecards: 117-112, 118-114, 120-113. Despite having a longer reach and greater speed, the champion had to fight hard to overcome the tough Valdez (114¾), who crowded his man early on while looking to land damaging left hooks to the body. By the sixth, however, Orono (115) had got his jab working and had opened a cut over Valdez’s right eye. With Orono’s strategy of working at distance proving to be sound, Valdez was more often than not stopped in his tracks by solid right hands to the head as he looked to get inside and at the final bell there was no doubt as to who had won.
