1983-06-16 Roberto Duran w rsc 8 (15) Davey Moore, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WBA. Referee: Ernesto Magana. Thought to be too young and too strong for his veteran challenger, Moore (154) found himself outpunched and outclassed by a man who had got himself into tip-top condition, as well as recovering total faith in his ability. With Duran (152½) digging in brutal blows to the body early on it drained Moore, who was never in the fight before being floored in the seventh by a big right. Although the champion somehow made it to the bell, the eighth brought him no respite and he was smashed around the ring by a rampant Duran, blasting away with both hands, before the referee came to his rescue on the 2.02 mark.
Supported as champion by the United States Boxing Association, who had set up an international body (USBA/I) back in April, later renamed as the International Boxing Federation (IBF) in late October, once Moore had lost to Duran and the IBF found that they could not do business with the latter they nominated Mark Medal and Earl Hargrove to meet for their version of the title.
