1983-06-25 Juan Laporte w pts 12 Johnny De La Rosa, Roberto Clemente Coliseum, San Juan, Puerto Rico - WBC. Referee: Arthur Mercante. Scorecards: 116-112, 115-114, 113-116. Struggling to retain his title against a challenger with good reach advantages, in the early stages Laporte (126) found it difficult to get inside as De La Rosa (126) piled up points with the jab while also scoring well with good rights and uppercuts. The champion continued to find it difficult but as the action wore on his power began to count, and although De La Rosa was never subdued Laporte began to impose himself more. Several times Laporte, fighting with some desperation, looked to be on the verge of an inside-the-distance victory, but De La Rosa stayed with him all the way, many feeling that the decision could have gone either way.

Towards the end of April, the United States Boxing Association (USBA) voted to form an international organisation (USBA/I) and agreed to recognise Laporte as its champion. However, unable to do business with Laporte, and now renamed as the International Boxing Federation, the IBF nominated Min-Keun Oh, the OPBF champion, and Joko Arter, the Indonesian champion, to meet for their version of the vacant title.
