1983-07-07 Bruce Curry w rsc 7 (12) Hidekazu Akai, Kinki University Arena, Osaka, Japan - WBC. Referee: Octavio Meyran. The opening two rounds saw Akai (139¾) take the champion by surprise when attacking him for all his worth, despite him having been cut over the left eye by an accidental butt early on. However, Curry (138¼) had settled by the third and was tossing in accurate left jabs and hooks at Akai, who responded in the fifth with a right-left which put the American on the seat of his trunks. Ruled a slip, Curry was up immediately and fought back strongly prior to running into a firestorm in the sixth as Akai went after him with incessant lefts and rights. Recognising that Akai had punched himself out in the sixth, Curry quickly got down to business in the seventh and temporarily dropped the challenger with solid head shots. Back in the fray, Akai was immediately assailed by a barrage of blows, the final one being a cracking right which dropped him in a heap and led to the doctor advising the referee to call the fight off after 71 seconds to enable treatment to be applied.
