1983-09-01 Alberto Davila w co 12 (12) Kiko Bejines, Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBC. Referee: Waldemar Schmidt. In a contest for the title vacated by Lupe Pintor and scheduled for 12 rounds, not 15, following the death of South Korea’s Deuk-Koo Kim in November 1982, the first ten sessions were closely fought, with Davilla (117½) behind on points, and was not a guide of what was to come. While it was noticeable in the 11th that Bejines (118) was tiring it was not until the final round that he suddenly wilted before being flattened by a tremendous right hand from Davilla. After trying to make it to his feet and being counted out on the 0.33 mark, Bejines was taken unconscious from the ring on a stretcher and, following an operation to remove a blood clot from his brain, he died in hospital three days later.
Although getting back into the ring for a non-title bout ten weeks later, Davila, while coming through well, unfortunately suffered hand problems which kept him on the sidelines for almost six months.
