1983-09-01 Alberto Davila w co 12 (12) Kiko Bejines, Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBC. Referee: Waldemar Schmidt. In a contest for the title vacated by Lupe Pintor, and scheduled for 12 rounds not 15, following the death of South Korea’s Deuk-Koo Kim in November 1982, the first ten sessions were closely fought, with Davila (117½) behind on points. While it was noticeable in the 11th that Bejines (118) was tiring it was not until the final round that he suddenly wilted before being flattened by a tremendous right hand from Davila. After trying to make it to his feet prior to being counted out on the 0.33 mark, Bejines was taken unconscious from the ring on a stretcher, and following an operation to remove a blood clot from his brain he died in hospital three days later.
Although getting back into the ring for a non-title bout ten weeks later, Davila, while coming through well, unfortunately suffered hand problems which kept him on the sidelines for almost six months.
