1983-09-03 Donald Curry w rsc 1 (15) Roger Stafford, Municipal Stadium, Marsala, Italy - WBA. Referee: Stan Christodoulou. Also supported by the USBA/I, soon to be known as the IBF, the contest lasted just 102 seconds, having been twice postponed due to a hand injury suffered by Curry. Despite stating that he would knock Curry out, the challenger was dropped by the opening blow, a stiff left jab, and although getting up and trying to box his way out of trouble he was soon caught again. Two left hooks followed by a right to the head had Stafford over for the second time, and after taking the mandatory ‘eight’ he blazed into Curry wildly before being shot down by a cracking right to the jaw that left the referee no option other than calling it off under the three knockdown in a round ruling.

Curry’s next defence would be against his number-one challenger, Marlon Starling. Starling who had lost just once in 32 contests – a split decision defeat at the hands of Curry – had beaten Floyd Mayweather, Kevin Howard and Tommy Ayers to obtain his high ranking. A clever fighter with a punch, who was known as ‘The Magic Man’, Starling was the USBA and NABF champion.
