Having kept the dangerous Kwon (114), cut over the left eye in the sixth, at bay for most of the contest an accidental clash of heads midway through the 11th saw Watanabe (115) reeling away and unable to continue due to a seriously gashed forehead. Under WBA rules, the champion, deemed by the judges to be ahead on points at the time, was awarded the decision.
