1983-12-04 Bobby Berna w rsc 9 (12) Sung-In Suh, Munhwa Gym, Seoul, South Korea - IBF. Referee: Joe Cortez. Having initially been formed as the United States Boxing Association/International (USBA/I) in April and renamed the International Boxing Federation (IBF) in October, Berna and Suh were nominated to meet for their version of the vacant title after the organisation were unable to support, for whatever reason, either Leonardo Cruz or Jaime Garza. Why Berna (121¼), who had been destroyed by Garza a few months earlier, got his chance against the Korean champion is anybody’s guess but he certainly took advantage of the situation to eventually win the title, albeit via a strange decision. Suh (121¾), who had been dropped in the first, was out in front when the contest was halted at the end of the ninth round due to him being cut on the right eye, and although the referee was prepared to give Berna the win by stoppage after much consultation the IBF decided to classify it as being a no-contest.
Within hours of that the IBF announced that Berna and Suh would meet again within 90 days, a statement which was followed a few days later by another official announcement that named Berna as being the champion by stoppage.
