1984-01-22 [[Johnny Bumphus]] w pts 15 [[Lorenzo Garcia]], Sands Hotel & Casino, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WBA. Referee: Tony Perez. Scorecards: 146-143, 144-142, 144-142. Contesting the title vacated by Aaron Pryor, neither man managed too much in the opening three sessions before Garcia (139¾) suddenly found a short right to drop the much taller Bumphus (139) for the mandatory count in the fourth. Back in action, Bumphus, who seemed more embarassed than hurt, was jolted by several rights to the chin before getting himself going and upping his work rate to take the next five rounds. The tempo of the fight was now increasing and following a lively ninth the cagey Garcia came again to make things tighter over the next few rounds, but as he began to suffer from fatigue it was the Tacoma southpaw who had enough left in the tank to make sure of victory.
