1984-01-29 Billy Costello w rsc 10 (12) Bruce Curry, Civic Centre, Beaumont, Texas, USA - WBC. Referee: Richard Steele. Defending his title for the third time, Curry (139½) felt the weight of his challenger’s punches as early as the first when a big left hook left him on unsteady legs. Bravely battling back, Curry began to take the fight to Costello (140) before being caught heavily again, in the fourth, and being cut over the left eye in the sixth. From the seventh onwards, Costello began to assume control with his heavy-laden left hooks and right hands seemingly shaking Curry up every time he connected, and at the end of the ninth the champion looked all in. The tenth saw no let up in Costello’s pursuit of Curry and when the latter had got to his feet after being dropped by a cracking left-right, being under severe pressure as all manner of blows reached their target, the referee came to his rescue after 56 seconds of the round had elapsed.
