1984-01-30 [[Charlie Choo Choo Brown]] w pts 15 [[Melvin Paul]], Sands Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - IBF. Referee: Larry Hazzard. Scorecards: 143-141, 145-140, 140-143. Brown (134¾), who became the IBF’s first champion at the weight on winning, was expecting to meet [[Alvin Hayes]], but when the latter suffered a hand injury in training Paul (133¾) substituted. Brown made a good start, dropping his rival in the first with a right to the jaw, before repeating the dose in the fourth to put himself in the driving seat. During the middle rounds, however, after Brown was cut on both eyes instead of relying on the counter he lost his focus. Coming into the final session with Brown still ahead, although Paul put him down with a good right to the chin it was not enough, the Philadelphian getting up to box his way out of trouble until the final bell.
