1984-03-11 Mark Medal w rsc 5 (15) Earl Hargrove, Sands Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - IBF. Referee: Paul Venti. Medal (152¾) became the first champion at the weight for the IBF when stopping Hargrove (153½) in the fifth round of what had been a fierce contest, with both men giving it everything they had. It was Hargrove who made the best start when hammering in blows to the head to take the opening three sessions, but the taller Medal weathered the storm to come on strongly in the fourth. Banging in punches to head and body, Hargrove, now cut on the right eye, was in dire straits in the fifth and after being badly hurt by a right to the jaw he was not fighting back when rescued by the referee 49 seconds into the session.
