1984-03-28 Murray Sutherland w pts 15 Ernie Singletary, Harrah’s Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - IBF. Referee: Larry Hazzard. Scorecards: 146-139, 147-140, 146-139. Battling for the inaugural IBF super-middleweight title and boxing to orders, Sutherland (167¼) kept Singletary (167¾) at bay with the left jab for round after round as the latter continually plodded forward. They were not solid jabs but they were effective and with Sutherland’s side-to-side movement making him a difficult target Singletary found it hard to get inside where he could get to work. There were no knockdowns, but the harder punches came from Sutherland, right crosses and left hooks to the body being his speciality.
