1984-06-01 Gene Hatcher w rsc 11 (12) Johnny Bumphus, Memorial Coliseum, Buffalo, New York, USA - WBA. Referee: John LoBianco. Although Hatcher (139½) made a good start when rocking the southpaw champion with a right to the jaw in the opening round and again in the fifth, he failed to follow up his advantage and began to fall behind on the cards. Switching from southpaw to orthodox and back again, the six-foot tall Bumphus (139½) certainly confused Hatcher, who seemed to rely on landing with one punch, and by the end of the tenth he was well ahead. With that in mind, Hatcher upped the pace in the 11th and instead of remaining at distance he began to work on the inside, a tactic which bore fruit immediately when he dropped Bumphus with a heavy left hook. Barely making it to his feet, Bumphus was all over the place as Hatcher hounded him and on the 2.35 mark the referee called it off to save the champion from taking further punishment.
