1984-07-05 Jiro Watanabe w pts 12 Payao Poontarat, Castle Sports Centre, Osaka, Japan - WBC. Referee: Richard Steele. Scorecards: 116-113, 115-116, 117-112. With Watanabe being the current WBA champion this should have unified the title, but, unfortunately, the commission failed to ratify the bout and stripped the winner the following day. The fight itself saw Watanabe (114¾) boxing to instructions, despite being cut over the left eye in the sixth round, to let Poontarat (114¾) punch himself out before coming on strong over the last third to win by a split decision.
