1984-07-15 Bill Costello w pts 12 Ronnie Shields, Midtown Centre, Kingston, New York, USA - WBC. Referee: Davy Pearl. Scorecards: 117-111, 117-110, 119-110. Fighting in stifling heat, both men eased through the opening round before the contest came alight in the second with Shields (140) dropped by a left hook, coming back strongly to put down the champion with a left hook of his own. Dusting himself down, Costello (138¾) began to control the fight, but could never take over completely despite cutting Shields over the left eye in the third and decking him twice more in the sixth following heavy rights to the head. Although Shields made a real fight of it, especially in the last round when he had Costello backing off and covering up, the difference in power was the deciding factor.
