1984-08-31 Pinklon Thomas w pts 12 Tim Witherspoon, Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBC. Referee: Richard Steele. Scorecards: 116-112, 115-112, 114-114. Piling up points with a solid left jab from round two, having been the recipient of some lusty punching in the opening session, Thomas (216) stuck to his game plan even when the champion tried to find his way back into the fight from the seventh onwards. Up to then Witherspoon (217) had been strangely lethargic and even had a point deducted for back-handing in the fifth. Fighting with some urgency in the eighth and ninth, Witherspoon hurt Thomas with some solid blows, but the latter refused to buckle and got back to his boxing to run out a deserved winner.
