1984-09-13 Julio Cesar Chavez w rsc 8 (12) Mario Martinez, Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBC. Referee: John Thomas. Contesting the vacant title after Hector Camacho had moved on, boxing witnessed the rise of Chavez (130), who was unbeaten after 40 contests and who ultimately proved to be too good for Martinez (129½). Although Martinez threw plenty of leather it was Chavez who gradually took over, countering from both hands and picking his fellow Mexican off with accurate jabs until the former was being caught without reply. By the end of the eighth, Martinez, cut over the right eye with his left closing fast, was without a prayer, and while he had not been knocked down he was rescued with just one second of the round remaining when the referee decided that he was in no fit state to continue.
