1984-10-19 [[Mike McCallum]] w pts 15 [[Sean Mannion]], Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WBA. Referee: Tony Perez. Scorecards: 150-134, 149-136, 149-123. Contesting the vacant title, Mannion (154) was no match for McCallum (153¾), and although he went the distance and stayed on his feet he was punished every time he went forward. Mannion, a southpaw, had no answer to McCallum’s left jab, which practically landed at will throughout, and finished the fight with his right eye nearly closed and badly bruised features. The indomitable Mannion even staggered McCallum in the ninth, but it was a one-off and only sheer grit and bravery got him through.
