1984-11-02 Carlos Santos w pts 15 Mark Medal, MSG Theatre, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - IBF. Referee: Joe Cortez. Scorecards: 146-138, 147-139, 142-140. Making his first defence, Medal (153½) was decked by a left to the jaw in the opening round and thereafter was confused by the southpaw stance of Santos (152½), who generally shifted from side to side and banged in blows from both hands before retreating. The big-punching Medal had great difficulty locating the shifty Santos as round followed round, but in the 14th he finally dumped the tiring challenger with a left hook to the jaw. Back on his feet, with Medal also weary from his exertions, Santos just about held his boxing together to make it to the final bell and a well-earned victory. Both fighters were cut over the right eye, Santos’ damage coming after a clash of heads.

Santos’ first challenger would be Louis Acaries, unranked by The Ring magazine, but a man who had just defeated the former WBA champion, Davey Moore, albeit by disqualification. In 44 contests, Acaries had won 39 and also beaten Everaldo Costa Azevedo, Jose Hernandez, Marijan Benes, Oscar Albarado and Frank Wissenbach. He was also a former European middleweight champion.
