1984-11-03 Bill Costello w pts 12 Saoul Mamby, Midtown Centre, Kingston, New York, USA - WBC. Referee: Tony Perez. Scorecards: 118-110, 119-109, 119-109. Putting up his title against a former champion in Mamby (139¼) on his home turf, the unbeaten Costello (140), showing a good left jab to go with heavy hands, nailed his man with plenty of big punches but was unable to apply the finisher. It was a tough fight for the 37-year-old Mamby, who came in as a substitute at six days notice for the injured Leroy Haley, but he defied all of Costello’s efforts to put him away and continued to make life difficult right through to the final bell. Although both men suffered cuts above their left eyes, the damage failed to alter the nature of the contest.
