1984-12-08 Azumah Nelson w rsc 11 (12) Wilfredo Gomez, Hiram Bithorn Stadium, San Juan, Puerto Rico - WBC. Referee: Octavio Meyran. Making his second world title challenge Nelson (125½) walked into Gomez (125½) to hurt him with solid blows right from the opening bell, it not being until the sixth round that the latter began to rally and fire in good punches of his own. From then right through the tenth both men delivered and received heavy shots, but it was noticeable that Gomez, swollen by the right eye, was beginning to lack zip. It was in the 11th that Nelson went for home, and keeping the punches flowing from both hands he knocked Gomez around the ring until the latter dropped, more from an accumulation of blows rather than a single shot. Up again, following an ‘eight’ count, when Gomez was smashed to the floor by two right hands the referee immediately called it off with just one second of the round remaining.
