1985-06-06 Michael Spinks w rsc 8 (12) Jim MacDonald, Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WORLD. Referee: Davy Pearl. Outscored in every round, the outclassed challenger did well to get beyond the seventh, having been knocked down in the fifth and seventh rounds and carrying a swollen left eye. Although MacDonald (172¼) was taking a beating there was always the chance that he might nail Spinks (175) with one of his big punches and he had already hurt the latter a couple of times. Giving it one last effort, MacDonald charged out for the eighth and even got through, but Spinks opened up and dropped him with a cracking left hook to the jaw. Although MacDonald was up at ‘eight’ the referee was not happy and called the fight off on the 1.30 mark.
Both the WBA and WBC vacated Spinks’ light heavy title early in November after he had won the IBF version of the heavyweight crown from Larry Holmes (w pts 15 at the Riviera Hotel & Casino on 21 September) and showed no interest in defending his 175lbs crown.
With no eliminators required just straight contests to decide the vacant titles, the WBA matched Leslie Stewart and Marvin Johnson, while the WBC settled on Prince Mama Mohammed and J. B. Williamson. A week later, at a press conference, Spinks officially relinquished the WBA, WBC and IBF titles, which was followed by the announcement that Eddie Mustafa Muhammad would be meeting the former Olympic gold medallist, Slobodan Kacar, for the last named title belt.
