1985-08-21 Lonnie Smith w rsc 8 (12) Billy Costello, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WBC. Referee: Luis Rivera. Starting well, the champion soon had Smith (138½) over from a left hook, but the latter recovered his senses to get to the bell and in the second round it was his turn to do some damage, knocking Costello (138½) down twice with heavy left hooks of his own. In the third, Costello continued to stalk Smith, but found his unorthodox hit-and-run style difficult to handle and gradually becoming frustrated he began to charge in throwing wild punches. Smith was now sensing that he’d got Costello’s measure and opening up in the fifth he dropped him with another left hook. On his feet again, Costello continued to take the fight to Smith, but in the eighth he reached the end of the road when a left jab-right uppercut combination downed him and although he got up the referee rescued him with 29 seconds of the session remaining when he was put down by uppercuts from both hands, for the fifth time in the fight. A powerful puncher, Costello had been made to look pedestrian by the accurate countering, faster hand speed and movement shown by Smith, who was accurately dubbed ‘Lightnin’’ in the build up to the fight.
