1986-01-17 Tim Witherspoon w pts 15 Tony Tubbs, The Omni, Atlanta, Georgia, USA - WBA. Referee: Nate Morgan. Scorecards: 144-143, 144-141, 143-143. In what was a very close fight it was the challenger’s extra determination and stamina that ultimately won him the title. There were no knockdowns, although the bulky Tubbs (244) almost went over in the eighth after a terrific left hook sent him staggering into the ropes. Boxing well at times, especially with left hand, Tubbs often failed to follow up his good work and in the last round with the result depending on who wanted it most it was Witherspoon, punching away with both hands, who edged it.
