1986-03-10 Gaby Canizales w rsc 7 (15) Richie Sandoval, Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBA. Referee: Carlos Padilla. Unbeaten going into the fight, the weight-weakened Sandoval (117¾) finally came unstuck when he was knocked down five times, once in the first, once in the fifth, and three times in the seventh, by Canizales (116½) before being stopped at 2.27 of that session under the WBA’s three-knockdowns-in-a-round ruling. Occasionally it looked as though the champion would get back into it when boxing behind the jab, but it was not to be. Sandoval spent the night in hospital, having been unconscious for around 15 minutes.
