1986-03-22 Trevor Berbick w pts 12 Pinklon Thomas, Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBC. Referee: Richard Steele. Scorecards: 115-113, 115-113, 115-114. Making his second attempt to win a title, Berbick (218½), boxing in determined fashion, upset the odds stacked against him when outpointing Thomas (222¾). Unable to dictate the fight as Berbick moved out of range and blocked jabs while getting his own on target, Thomas often appeared listless and out of ideas. Even though Berbick was swollen under the left eye as early as the second round, Thomas failed to take advantage. By the eighth it was clear that Thomas was tiring, and when he was cut over the left eye it inspired Berbick to come on stronger, repeatedly taking the fight to the champion with solid left hooks and rights to head and body. Although there were no knockdowns, it was the better quality of Berbick’s blows that won him the fight while Thomas was warned on several occasions for punching with the open glove.
