1986-03-30 Gilberto Roman w pts 12 Jiro Watanabe, Castle Sports Centre, Osaka, Japan - WBC. Referee: Steve Crosson. Scorecards: 116-112, 116-114, 116-112. Although the decision was unanimous it was very close and the action seesawed as both men looked to stamp their authority on the minds of the judges. Despite there being no knockdowns it was pretty intense stuff and Roman (114¾), in offsetting the reach advantage of Watanabe (115), persistently ducked under the southpaw lead to shoot uppercuts to the body, while the champion spent too much time on the defensive to warrant victory.
