1986-04-26 Gary Hinton w pts 15 Reyes Antonio Cruz, Sports Palace, Lucca, Italy - IBF. Referee: Randy Neumann. Scorecards: 143-142, 145-140, 144-142. In a closely fought contest for the vacant title it was Hinton (139½) who came through to take the verdict despite winning just one of the last four rounds. The previously unbeaten Cruz (139¼) boxed well, but was often confused by Hinton’s southpaw stance as the latter scored well with barrages of right jabs and hooks. On reflection Cruz’s slow start probably cost him the fight, but there was never much in it with both men exchanging sharp blows up until the final bell.
