1986-06-04 [[Buster Drayton]] w pts 15 [[Carlos Santos]], Byrne Meadowlands Arena, East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA - IBF. Referee: Tony Orlando. Scorecards: 145-141, 145-140, 143-143. Contesting the title he had earlier forfeited and was now vacant, Santos (153) failed to match Drayton (152¾), who forced matters and hit that bit too hard for his rival. Having come into the fight as a replacement for the injured [[Davey Moore]], Drayton was not going to let his opportunity slip against the slippery southpaw and often switched himself to even things up. Although Santos gave a courageous display, having been rocked several times, he was unable to keep Drayton at bay for long, and even when getting through he would invariably have to take heavy shots in return. After being cut over the left eye in the 11th round Santos was forced to defend more and he probably lost the fight between the 12th and 14th when Drayton dominated. Despite having a good last session Santos was unable to change the course of the contest and had to settle for being a good loser.
