1986-07-12 Evander Holyfield w pts 15 Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Omni Coliseum, Atlanta, Georgia, USA - WBA. Referee: Vincent Rainone. Scorecards: 144-140, 147-138, 141-143. In only his 12th pro fight, Holyfield (186) won the title on a split decision after coming on strong from the tenth round onwards. How one of the cards should be so wide was ridiculous with the contest being in question most of the way as first one man scored with heavy shots and then the other. Both men took heavy blows without blinking, but it was Holyfield’s quality and speed that surprised Qawi (189¾). Knowing that he had to put on a show in the final session Qawi came out firing, but after being deducted a point for going low and with Holyfield happy to keep out of trouble the champion’s reign was over.
