18 July Jeff Fenech w rsc 14 (15) Steve McCrory, Entertainment Centre, Sydney, Australia - IBF. Referee: Paul Moore. Roared on by a big crowd, Fenech (118) proved to be too strong for McCrory (117), the brother of the WBC welter champion, and dominated throughout, body punches continually softening his challenger up. As well as McCrory boxed early on he was unable to keep Fenech at bay for long and was ultimately worn down and rescued by the referee at 1.41 of the penultimate round. Fenech relinquished the IBF version of title in February 1987 in order to challenge Thailand’s Samart Payakarun for the WBC junior featherweight crown.
