1986-07-19 [[Tim Witherspoon]] w rsc 11 (15) [[Frank Bruno]], The Stadium, Wembley, London, England - WBA. Referee: Isidro Rodriguez. Having started well, especially with the left jab, it was only in the sixth that the challenger began to be caught heavily and in the eighth Witherspoon (234¾) was letting right swings go with a vengeance. Although Bruno (228) was now hanging on he came back well in the eighth as Witherspoon’s left eye began to close, but from thereon he tired rapidly and in the 11th the American was virtually walking through him. A big left hook followed by heavy rights to the head had Bruno staggering backwards and following a blitz of right hands from Witherspoon that ended with the Englishman slipping to the floor the referee finally stopped the fight with just three seconds of the round remaining. With the right side of Bruno’s face badly swollen it was first feared that he had suffered a broken jaw, but X-rays showed no fracture.
