1986-09-20 [[Marvin Johnson]] w rsc 13 (15) [[Jean-Marie Emebe]], Market Square Arena, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA - WBA. Referee: Luis Rivera. Defending his new title for the first time, Johnson (175) was in a real war with the hard-hitting Emebe (174) and had to take some heavy punches before finally coming through at 1.41 of the 13th. There were no knockdowns, but both men handed out plenty of punishment and in the 11th the doctor was called upon by the referee to inspect Emebe’s facial damage, his left eye that was cut in the eighth and his right eye that was swollen shut giving concern.  Although all three judges had the southpaw champion ahead by a couple of rounds coming into the 13th, Emebe was still in with a chance, but after taking a heavy left hand and with the blood flowing the referee called the fight off.
