1986-12-02 [[Tsuyoshi Hamada]] w pts 12 [[Ronnie Shields]], Kokugikan Arena, Tokyo, Japan - WBC. Referee: Arthur Mercante. Scorecards: 111-108, 116-111, 113-115. With Shields (139¼) proving difficult to pin down and fighting cautiously, the southpaw champion was forced to make the running, but relied too heavily on the left cross, which missed its target more often than not. Deducted a point in the fourth for going low, Hamada (139¾) began to have difficulty in avoiding right-hand counters and in round seven he was cut over the right eye. Still coming forward Hamada continued to work the body with fair success, but in the 11th Shields finally cut loose, also making the body a target, and although he had fair success right through to the final bell his efforts came too late.
