1986-12-02 Tsuyoshi Hamada w pts 12 Ronnie Shields, Kokugikan Arena, Tokyo, Japan - WBC. Referee: Arthur Mercante. Scorecards: 111-108, 116-111, 113-115. While Shields (139¼) proved difficult to pin down and fought cautiously, with the southpaw champion being forced to make the running he relied too heavily on the left cross which missed its target more often than not. Deducted a point in the fourth for going low, Hamada (139¾) began to have difficulty in avoiding right-hand counters, something that led to him being cut over the right eye in round seven. Still coming forward, Hamada continued to work the body with fair success, but in the 11th Shields finally cut loose, also making the body a target, and although he had fair success right through to the final bell his efforts came too late.
