1986-12-05 Greg Haugen w pts 15 Jimmy Paul, Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - IBF. Referee: Davy Pearl. Scorecards: 143-142, 144-141, 143-143. Making his fourth defence of the IBF title, Paul (135) did not really work hard enough against a strong and determined challenger who took the fight to him from the opening bell and worked the body well to fully deserve the majority decision that went his way. In what was a gruelling fight, Haugen (135) did his best work through to the tenth when he crowded Paul out and it was only when the latter got his combinations working in the latter part of the contest that things improved for him. Coming on strong, Paul won four of the last six sessions as Haugen tired but he could not find a finishing punch and was ultimately forced to reflect on what might have been. The new champion finished the fight with a cut over the right eye.
