1986-12-12 [[Julio Cesar Chavez]] w pts 12 [[Juan Laporte]], Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WBC. Referee: Richard Steele. Scorecards: 114-113, 115-114, 117-112. In a bitterly fought contest, with both men trading blows to head and body from the start, Chavez (129) just about retained his title despite having a point deducted in the ninth for punching low. The former WBC featherweight champion, Laporte (128¾), certainly made Chavez earn his victory and at the end of the ninth he was level on two of the scorecards. Realising it was close, the next two rounds saw the champion produce the better quality to get his nose ahead and although the Puerto Rican finished strongly it wasn’t enough for him to make up the leeway.
