1987-02-06 Mark Breland w co 7 (15) Harold Volbrecht, Trump Plaza Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WBA. Referee: Tony Perez. Contesting the vacant title against Volbrecht (146½), America’s Breland (146) became the new champion when winning by a knockout at 2.07 of the seventh round after two quick right hands to the jaw had done the damage. Having hurt his left hand in the opening session, the 6’2½” Breland was forced to rethink his game-plan against the South African southpaw, especially as he had great difficulty in catching up with him when he was on the back foot. Prior to the ending Volbrecht had been staggered several times, but the former Olympic champion was happy to wait for the opportunity he knew would eventually come.
