1987-03-07 Mike Tyson w pts 12 James Bonecrusher Smith, Hilton Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBA/WBC. Referee: Mills Lane. Scorecards: 120-106, 119-107, 119-107. With two titles on the line, the WBC champion outscored Smith (233) by a long chalk and despite the prediction of it being an exciting contest it failed to live up to the ballyhoo. In a boring affair it was noticeable almost from the start that the slow and awkward looking Smith, cut over the left eye in the second, was intent on stopping Tyson (219) from working by tying him up again and again. Even though he was deducted two points for those infringements he carried on regardless. Tyson, for his part, tried to make a fight of it but showed his limitations when unable to close Smith down and allowed him far too much room.
